Older versions of CorelDraw can't open files made in newer versions. North Forge has several different versions; you should back-save your files to (version 17?) to be able to open them on any fab lab computer.

I usually save them as oldest version because it's easiest to remember and the vector functionality we use doesn't seem much affected by it. Would that be a reasonable instruction?
