Metal Grinding Room Precautions apply

You will be working in the Metal Grinding Room . In order to keep safe from hazards created by you or other workers using any of the tools in this room, the following precautions apply in addition to any other precautions:

Safety

Hazards

  • Toxic Dust
  • Projectiles
  • Noise
  • Burns (heat from friction)
  • Sharp edges and tooling
  • Entanglement in belts, spindles

PPE

  • Safety glasses
  • Face shield

Precautions

Do

  • Be careful when handing the workpiece or wheel as edges may be sharp
  • Be careful when grinding as the workpiece will heat up, possibly causing burns
  • Use the appropriate tool for the job - some wheels are not suitable for some materials

Do Not

  • Use grinding equipment with large gaps between the platen and the grinding surface
  • If you know of anything that users shouldn't do while using the grinding room please put it here
  • Any materials you shouldn't grind?

The Small Tumbler is the baby sibling to the Large Finishing Tumbler.

This tool ends up being shoved behind the abrasive media for tumblers.

Abrasive media

The fablab has various kinds of abrasive media, primarily used in the Large Finishing Tumbler, Small Tumbler, Sandblasting Cabinet (large), Sandblasting Cabinet (small) and the Global Max 1508 Waterjet System.

Garnet for Global Max 1508 Waterjet System

We get this by the pallet and the bags are usually either stored on their pallet or on a shelf next to the sandblaster. The media can also be used in the Sandblasting Cabinet (large)/Sandblasting Cabinet (small). It's possible it could also be used in the tumblers.

Sandblasting media

See Template:Sandblasting#Replacing blasting media for how to replace this in the tools.

We have some sandblasting media in red boxes in the shelf under the sandblasters:

  • crushed glass
  • wallnut shell

Baking soda is a milder alternative. We don't supply it.

Tumbler media

We have abrasive media and some polishing fluids for the tumblers. They are in buckets under the work table in the Metal Grinding Room. See Instructions:Large Finishing Tumbler#Tumbling Media for more info.
