Safety
Hazards
Entanglement hazard: getting sucked into the lathe will result in death or dismemberment. Do not:
- Wear loose hair, clothing, jewellery, earbuds, etc. NO HOODIES OR GLOVES. TIE BACK long sleeves.
- Reach over the chuck while the spindle is running
- Clear chips, change tools, or measure parts while the spindle is running
- Use the equipment if you're tired, distracted, intoxicated, or otherwise impaired
Projectile hazard: objects and chips being thrown by the lathe. Do not:
- Operate without wearing safety glasses
- Leave parts or tools on the headstock, tailstock, or carriage
- Operate the lathe if the part or the chuck is not properly secured
- Leave chuck keys in the chuck when starting the lathe
- Take excessively deep/aggressive cuts
- Use automatic feed when close to the chuck
Laceration hazard: sharp parts and tools. Do not:
- Clear chips with bare hands
- Handle sharp tools or parts carelessly
Safety features
- Emergency stop
- Foot brake
- Interlocked chuck cover
- Spring-loaded chuck key
- Chip guards
Housekeeping and Tool Care
- Board to protect ways when changing chuck
- Not using compressed air to clean
- Protecting ways with drop cloth when sanding
- Wipe ways before starting due to grinding dust?
- Cleaning chips when done: nothing on carriage or ways, empty chip tray when a layer of chips has formed on the bottom
