  • In many ways this is the only consistent onboarding some members will get. Tempting to tell them everything then. But the more we add, the less will stick. So we'll need to decide how to balance that. EG could some of the specifics be pushed to the initial safety portion of room level training rather than being handled at the initial safety orientation? Which? And can we ensure trainers actually do it?

  • the checklist we have should go here or be linked from here.
    • John has added a summary of topics that needs links to the relevant pages below. We can also link to the entire checklist on the community portal
      • The checklist itself should move here, both to make sure it's updatable and also to make sure that the way that is accessible to members inherently links to places on the wiki where they can remind themselves of what they learned, or can find out more. John is working on this, I put anything that could potentially be linked as italics so others can find them more easily and add the relevant links.

  • This is currently organized in the same way that you would conduct the orientation in person - that means facility-wide information like air gun use is nested under certain rooms. Does it make sense to keep this page organized that way?
    • I think we can do better. Will need to figure out the details. Tool hazards will have a field to say if they affect the room. Maybe all room level hazards should be discussed? Or should we have an additional value for that field "Room and Orientation" to put them here? Or are they two separate things?
      • A more productive approach is to figure out what the safety orientation should theoretically contain, then fill out this page to match that. Right now the checklist contains things that would be better handled during training.

  • Is it a good idea to include an overview of more specific hazards that might only apply to operators?
    • I don't think so due to information overload, maybe in specific situations. Orientation should be aimed at things all members need to know, operator specific could be handled during training -John

  • Is there more than the Flammables Cabinets and the Hazardous materials fridge?
    • Yes, member storage and private workspaces can have hazardous materials.
      • do we cover that in the orientation, though?
        • No, but we might want to have guidelines for member storage, maybe encourage people to store chemicals in secondary containers in case of spill, ID things that we don't want stored at North Forge if any, that sort of thing

We should discuss this further and refine it. We (and the Act) say that you are responsible for others' safety (like if someone with no PPE wanders in, you should stop what you're doing), but it can be difficult to pay attention to what others are doing when you're trying to get your own work done.

Do all visitors need to sign a waiver as well?

These are mentioned in the checklist but I don't know what is actually said during the orientation. Given that we haven't worked these procedures out yet, I doubt it is accurate. In general, people should either disable the equipment or put up a broken sign that covers either the power source or controls for the equipment (such that you have to remove the sign to be able to operate the equipment)

does it explain how to record materials when using the Paint Room Fume Extractor, or what can be stored on the Paint Room Drying Shelf and for how long? The orientation covers information about recording materials, not sure about shelves

This is included in the checklist but this is better handled during training.
